June 17, 2012 - Dawson Creek - Mile "0" of the Alaskan highway

Just as I predicted, we left at 7:50 this morning and got on the road headed to Dawson Creek. Again, it was pretty flat for most of the way, we had decided to take an easier route than the one through Jasper park, and let Bessie rest up for the Rockies to come...

We tried to buy gas in Spruce Grove before we left, but their pumps were not working.  We bought it later on down the road, and I am getting better at converting liters to gallons...

Today was the first day we have really run into rain, and so we have considered ourselves very lucky.  It was just a steady rain today for about an hour, and then cleared.  We stopped at the visitor centre ( feeling Canadian) and picked up some literature and had lunch.  Bought some pasta salad yesterday for Charlie and surprised him with it today - he thoroughly enjoyed it.

We made it to Hythe and tried to buy gas again, and after Charlie had pumped 2 gallons, the pump ran dry!  We had bought the last gas they had, and the truck wasn't coming for another two hours... We were fine, but it certainly drove home what people have been telling us about "buy gas when you can".... We bought it a few miles down in Dermmit, AB, just before entering British Columbia, because we had heard the cost went up quite a bit in BC.  And sure enough, when we entered BC, we found that to be true.  It is 1.29 a liter here.

We made it to Dawson Creek and it started raining again, so we found a campsite called Northern Lights and settled in for the night.  They have WiFi, so I have been able to update the blog, but pics are really too slow, so I will have to upload them later.  We had beef stir fry for dinner with rice, and it is now 11:15 and it is just barely dusk outside.  I can see the trailers next to me with  not trouble at all.

We have made reservations at a campground 160 miles from here for tomorrow night.  Charlie hopes to get some fishing in as it is next to the Swainni? River.  I hope he catches a huge fish. : )  We will buy our licenses in the morning before leaving Dawson Creek.

We plan to off load DiDi on a few of the steeper grades, and I will just drive her, and then Bessie will not have to tow her up the mountains.  We read in the Mile Post that there were grades of 6 to 10 % coming up, and we just think it will be easier on the old gal.

Our next real stop in the days after river fishing will be Laird, BC... where we will get to spend some time soaking in a natural hot spring.  I am really looking forward to that, it not only sounds relaxing, I think it will be quite the experience.

  2. Your trip sounds great so far...wanted to share with you.....Charlie said he wanted to make it to the Arctic Ocean...my friend who is on her 4th trip to Alaska next week shared their adventure to Barrows which is a small town on the artic..you need to hop a bush plane from Fairbanks to get there...this is where eskimo families live (Barrows) and polar bears "play"..ha-ha! .however you most likely wouldnt see any this time of year! Be prepared however..temp are 30 degrees this time of year..& most desolute place they have ventured in Alaska.....but make sure you dont miss out on visiting the Ice Hotel.....if it is still there....built almost entirely of ice 60 miles NE of Fairbanks if you do make it to Fairbanks! Please do that for me in case I never get a chance to go back to Alaska!!!! Share all your memories with us so I can DREAM :)....& bring back many pics!!!! Oh dont forget to wear that whistle around your necks & USE it to steer those grizzlies & moose at bay... So excited for you 2...will definitely keep up with your experiences....BTW ...Loving those imaginery pics :)

    1. Thank you for the info! I will pass it on to Charlie - as far as grizzlies, I have decided I just need to be the fastest runner. Those animals are so wild looking, I hope to never see one without being in a car.... : ) Hope you have a great summer and that Boyd is doing well racing.
