June 16, 2012 Glacier park

Today Charlie discovered that one of the trailer tires is “cupping” and so decided to drive to Cut Bank (62 miles away) and buy two new tires for the trailer.  We did not want to have to worry about it as we traveled into the wilderness of Canada and Alaska.  We also needed to do laundry, so we loaded it up and did it while we waited on the tires.  It really didn't take very long, and we were back by 1:00.    This was our view coming back.

We spent the afternoon taking care of things around the camp and calling family since we will be in Canada tomorrow and may be out of touch for a while.  We had an omelet, that really turned into scrambled eggs, for dinner and then loaded up our fishing gear and off we went!

We fished in the Rising Sun Creek, which was very pretty, but moving too fast to do much fishing.  We still stayed and fished for a while though just because it was such a nice area.  We used bright pink bait, called, “magic trout bait” and it was sort of like bubble gum.  I think it surprised Charlie I knew how to tie off a hook, but my dad has taught me well.   : )

We left the creek and moved down to fish at a lake called, Lost Lake.  This lake has snails from a prehistoric time, and you are not allowed to get into the water, but I am not sure who would want to, I guess maybe people who were fly fishing?  Anyway... Charlie decided to make a wildlife sweep, before we started fishing again and -  Wow, were we glad we did, because as we rounded the corner just past the lake, there in the road, walking straight toward us was a big ole Grizzly!

It sauntered to about 15 feet in front of the car and then veered up the hill next to us.  I have to say it was mean looking, well, mean may be too strong, but it definitely looked like it was saying, “don’t mess with me….”   We took some good shots which I was able to post earlier with my phone...

After it walked on, we drove back down to the lake but since the Mr. GB ( Grizzly Bear) we in the know just call them GB… had been very close to the lake we were planning to fish, Charlie and I decided to leave the car unlocked in case we needed to make a quick get away....

The lake is off the road and down a bit, so it looks like it is hidden.  It is really the size of a medium pond, but it was soooo pretty.  It felt as if we had stepped back in time.   I was concerned about ticks though, so I had put my pant legs down in my socks and sprayed myself well with bug spray…. I looked pretty funny, but as far as I can tell,  the ticks left me alone.

We baited our hooks and went to fishin’.  Amazingly, I caught a little Brook Trout - it was too little to keep, but fun to catch.  We only caught old fishing line and sticks after that, but it was so still and quiet, it was just pleasant to be hanging out there.  We did keep a look out for the GB though….. but made it safely back to the car, and since it was around 9:00 p.m. decided to make our last wildlife viewing run.

As we rounded a curve, we ran into what we now recognize as a “Bear jam” and looked up and there was a enormous GB.  This one was much bigger than the last one, and thankfully was up on the top of a crop of rocks and no real threat to us. It did not hang around long, so we moved on and before the drive was done, we had seen three white tail deer, an elk, and the two Grizzly's.  We thought it a successful night of animal watching and enjoyed the fishing, even if we did not really catch much.  (Some of us didn’t catch anything, but I am not naming names…)

Tomorrow we head out to Canada.
