This is my second visit to
Glacier. I was lucky enough to visit with Caroline and Michael - 13 years
ago. My parents were on their way back from Alaska and met us at the park and we
drove through the park together. It is as pretty as I remember and is one of my favorite places in the country.
On our way to Glacier ,we stopped in
Shelby - hoping to camp, but there was no where to stay, so we went to a grocery
store and an auto parts store and then drove 70 miles to get to the park. Charlie was pretty tired by the time we got here since he had driven all day, but he was a trooper about it. On the way in, we ran into several sets of loose
horses, just roaming and hanging out about the highway, so we had to be very
careful every time we rounded a corner.
We got to the park around 8:30 p.m.
and the entrances were no longer manned. Since the “season” doesn’t really start
until July much of the park on this side is barely
manned.
We picked out a camping spot, in St.
Mary’s campground and once again, and settled in for the night. I heated up our leftover salmon
meal - (love those leftovers...) and then we went for a walk and ended up meeting a group of young people who were moving to
Seattle from North Carolina. They were trying to set up tents, but the
wind was howling here, and it kept blowing their tents away. I have
noticed that it is starting to stay light here for a LONG time…. It was 10:00
p.m. and it was still light outside.
Excited about seeing the park tomorrow!
