Woke up during the night and considered going out to see the stars but it was too cloudy so chose not to. Woke up at 4:15 to see the sunrise and woke Charlie up to see it too. We decided to get up and make coffee and head out to see what the Badlands looked like so early. I was very glad we did. We saw blue birds, chipmunks and a gorgeous display of scenery.
On the way back to camp we pulled off and happened to see a turkey and then turned around and saw a double rainbow. There was a storm beginning to roll in and it made the sky beautiful! We also saw a mule deer as we were headed back to camp. We are getting better at spotting the wildlife. Made breakfast, packed up DiDi and headed out for more sightseeing. I drove so Charlie could have a break, one of the first animals we saw was a coyote! I was so excited to see him! The peaks were partially in the sun and partially in shade and were breathtaking. You could see forever and a day and everywhere ou looked you saw God's handiwork.
We took a side road out to see a prairie dog town, but it was not much different than what we saw at the pioneer home. There were a few bison out there though so that was fun. By the time we got back, we had seen the coyote, pronghorn sheep, prairie dogs, bison, a rabbit, turkeys, and big horn sheep! On one of the turns we saw several cars stopped (a sure sign something is around) and we saw three grown big horn sheep and four young baby sheep. They walked right off the mountain and across the road with at least 10 cars there and people everywhere. They could not have cared less that we were there. Charlie was within a few feet of them when we went by. It was the perfect time to go, we were back around noon and were inside the camper before it got really hot. We just tinkled around most of the day - me trying to get the Internet, (without much success I should add...) but Cissy was very helpful.
And Charlie messing with the vehicles... He fixed the tail light on DiDi and met a very interesting man named Larry who had been traveling in a motor home for 7 1/2 years. Charlie had me burn him a cd of Phillip Phillips and he gave it to him. Oh, and on our morning trip, we went to Wall Drug Store. They advertise free ice water and 5 cent coffee for MILES on the interstate. It was fun. We had a cup of coffee, a glass of water and shared a doughnut that freshly made there. Coffee and doughnut was good, water only so so... : ). Bought a few souvenirs and headed back to camp. Again, it was perfect having DiDi with us to drive around in. So so glad we brought her. Tonight made homemade pizza and sour dough bread. Tomorrow, Mt. Rushmore, Custer Park, and maybe Deadwood.
