BEARS!!!! WOLVES!!! COYOTES!!!!

June 12, 2012

Yep that's right, we saw it all. After getting a late start because I had my occasional migraine visitor... We headed out with lunch pack, and warm clothes if needed. In all today we saw more elk, antelope, chipmunks, groundhog, deer and bison, but just as we got onto one of the loops, there were rangers and tons of people on the side of the road. That always means bears to us seasoned Yellowstone travelers. : ) There in the field were three grizzly bears. A mom and two cubs. A Grizzly! Right there! We were a little excited as were the folks around us.

Later we saw a coyote cross the road in front of us, and walk 5 feet from the car, and we saw two wolves stalking a herd of antelope!

It was like Discovery channel.... I have that on video if it turned out... And they were also, just right there next to the road. The amazing thing was the antelope turned and faced the wolf and then when he went and laid down in taller grass away from them a bit, they walked over to where he was and stared him down. The male antelope then came up and did the same thing. The other wolf just stayed hidden - but those antelope totally intimidated those wolves! Go antelope!!!

We also saw a black bear up the side do a mountain and later another one. We felt very blessed to have seen these usually reclusive animals. So there, migraine! You were that it made our timing perfect for seeing these animals. : )

We also saw many boiling basins and Charlie and I found one off the road in a meadow we stopped in and put our fingers in - it was HOT! So it is not an illusion when boiling, it really is. There were too many people trying too see the iconic sights like Old Faithful, and we did not want to sit in traffic jams, which is what we were doing, so we turned around and went looking for a road less traveled, which we found. We saw tons of snow, some still 2 to 3 feet deep, a waterfall called Virginia Cascades...and continued to marvel at the beauty and the wildlife. Ate sandwiches by the road, and got back around 8. Another long hot shower, blog entries, and now it is off to bed. I may have found a way to post directly to the blog from my phone, so I may be able to add pictures and small comments when we do not have service. Tomorrow we head for Glacier Park.
