Homer and Halibut, and whale spotting dog

July 29, 2012

Caught 22 pounds of Halibut in Homer - now that was some hard fishing.  We left at 6:30 or so and were done by 9:30 with everyone on board catching their limit of two.  Charlie still did not feel great, but he did well and caught two nice fish.

these are the ones we caught....

To catch the fish, you had to let out about 250 feet of line, that had a 2 lb weight on it.  Then when they bit, you had to reel in the 250 feet of line, with the weight and your 10 - 12 lb fish..... Charlie caught his pretty fast, I had to reel in a few extra times because I either lost my fish while waiting for them to take it off the hook ( we were not allowed to) or my bait got snatched and I had to reel it back up for more.  As we all know I am rather clumsy - so the whole time I am also thinking I am going to drop their rod in ocean, which luckily I did not do.... : )  It was fun though and something we had never done before.

After fishing the captain took us to look for whales and I was able to see at least two.  One breached and it's tale was huge!  There was also a dog on board that would start barking when there was a whale around, even before we could see it - that was pretty amazing too.

We had the fish processed and shipped home, so we will be able to share some of it with family and friends.  Also added the Red salmon that Charlie had caught, so it got shipped too - it was 2 lbs of meat.

Glad to be back at the Russian - all is well with Bessie - and Charlie and I are both glad to be out of the car.
