Fishing the Kenai

August 4, 2012

Up and fishing again bright and early.  There were still a lot of fish, but no where as many as yesterday.  Charlie and I both caught our limit again, and got back pretty early.

Charlie is fileting the fish at the river and cutting them into portion sizes, so all we do when we get back is put them in the refrigerator.   Makes it much easier to take care of that way.

We had whole wheat, fresh blueberry pancakes for breakfast - man were they good.

Decided to go check out fishing on the Kenai river - it is glacier water, and so it is blind fishing for the most part, but the reds were often going thru the water there like dolphins.  It was amazing to see, at times and at certain parts of the river, it looked like it was boiling!

We did not do very well fishing there though - I snagged three, one took every bit of line I had on my rod - and then broke the line.  The other two just broke the line after I snagged them.  the water is very deep and swift and they just turn tail and run up river when they are snagged, and I just could not stop them.  I think we would need bigger rods and reels to fish there. They are huge fish, most have started turning red, so they put up a good fight and most are around 14 - 16 pounds.

We saw two big, dark, grizzlies across the river, and one black bear, but none on our side.  I guess we fished and hiked for about 5 hours and then headed home.

Starting to narrow down our dates to leave the Russian, it will probably be Wednesday or Thursday of this week.  Then probably heading to Southeast Alaska.
