Back to some old haunts to see if the fish are in...

July 7, 2012

Slept in a bit this morning, maybe 9:00?  It rained most of the night, it is so nice sleeping in the RV when it is raining, it is just like rain on a tin roof.

Charlie went fishing again, but didn’t catch anything.  I washed off Didi and Bessie, easy to do since they had been wet all night.  I was surprised we did not see a moose last night, there is moose poop everywhere in the campground.  But I  never caught sight of one.

We left around noon, headed to the Gukana River.  That is where we talked to the older couple last month, and they were still there, but no one else was – so obviously the fish have not started running yet.

Drove on down to the Gultina River, there were people there fishing so we stopped to try our luck.  It was much lower, but still the glacier water you cannot see through, so you are fishing blind.  Tried out the new waders, Charlie said they were great, so we are pleased at the purchase.  No bites, so we headed out to the Wrangler-St Elias National Park.  Largest and newest I think….  I believe it encompasses the Alaskan Range!  Had lunch there and filled up our water bottles and talked to the people the visitor center.

Stopped for gas at the Hub again, paid 4.40 – some of the highest we have paid here.  Then we drove down to a valley we had seen on our first trip through.  (It is where we stopped for coffee and cookies in late June) – This time we drove down this long dirt road and stayed where we had seen other RV’s before.  It was very "off the road" and simply beautiful.  I truly felt we were boondocking there.

Made stir-fry for dinner and settled in, it was cold down in the valley, I can tell we are not in Fairbanks anymore.
